NO KIDS
Artists don’t have kids. Musicians, writers, sculptors, performers, actors, and activists – none of them have kids. At least many of the ones I know. WHY they don’t have children, I discovered, was a fascinating story.
The topic resonates well beyond the private/personal domains into the political, public, social, spiritual and artistic spheres. HA, a Dutch artist paints/draws kids and has them interact in the process; FO is a street artist-mentor of Lower Eastside girls; GP is an Italian teacher, teaching English literature to Turkish students in Istanbul who declared: “we are your children”; SB is a Bangladeshi human rights activist who grew up an orphan and now works for UNDP and on women’s rights issues [arranged marriages]. Moreover, my daughter, an only child, has some 10 unofficial artistic aunts and uncles who have all taken their kidless energies to imparting the wonders of art and music to her.
